Pyometra = Pus Filled Uterus

Pyometra = Pus Filled Uterus

We recently have had several cases of pyometra present to our clinic. Most recently, an 8 year old unspayed black lab cross.  She came in and had not been eating well for 6 days, and vomited any time she tried to eat. She had a foul discharge at her vulva area, and was quite lethargic. Upon radiographs, this is what we found:

Pus filled uterus

Pus filled uterus

She was immediately placed on intravenous fluids, and intravenous antibiotics. We performed an emergency spay (ovariohysterectomy) to remove the infected uterus. She recovered nicely and went home the next day. This condition can and will be fatal to your pet if not treated appropriately. We strongly encourage you to spay or neuter your pets.
