Dental Diet Success Story.

Why We Recommend Dental Diets

Today we had a 7 year old miniature schnauzer in for a dental cleaning and examination.  He has been eating Hills TD diet and doing great on it.  Upon examination  we could clearly see how the TD diet had been benefiting him.  Here is a picture before we had done any cleaning.

What this picture  shows us is that his chewing teeth (the biggest teeth in the back half of the mouth) are clean.  Note the discoloration on the canine tooth (the large fang).  This discoloration is not present on the teeth he chews his TD kibble with.  It is really quite impressive the work this diet has done for him.

Incisors

Unfortunately, dogs only chew with the back teeth and this little guy had to have some of his front teeth removed due to crowding, and the fact he does not use these teeth to chew.  As you can see from the picture above the incisors (front teeth) are discolored and have a great deal of recession causing more of the root of the tooth to be visible and susceptible to infection.  This leads to infection and ultimately is why these teeth were removed on Murphy.

What else can you do?

Dental diets are great as we can see here.  Unfortunately they may not be the solution for all dogs and cats.  Some pets suffer from other medical conditions limiting their food options, while others just don’t seem to agree with them.  In this instance as well as in addition to a dental diet we recommend brushing or an oral gel.  We have been using oral gels more recently and find them easier than brushing with equal benefits.  If you have any questions about a good oral health regime for your pet feel free to talk to any of our technicians or doctors today.  We love talking about teeth!!
